Fourth Sunday of Great Lent - St. John Climacus
March 22, 2026
Fourth Sunday of Great Lent - Commemoration of St. John Climacus (St. John of the Ladder)
☦ Liturgical Readings
Tone: 1
Epistle: Hebrews 6:13-20
Gospel: Mark 9:17-31
Today the Church honors the memory of St. John Climacus, the author of The Ladder of Divine Ascent, one of the most beloved spiritual works in the Orthodox tradition. His feast is placed on the Fourth Sunday of Great Lent to remind us that this holy season is itself a ladder of spiritual growth, leading us step by step toward the joy of Pascha.
St. John teaches us that the path to God is not taken in a single leap, but through patient, daily effort: prayer, fasting, repentance, and acts of love. Each rung of the ladder draws us closer to the Lord and further from the passions that weigh us down.
As we reach the midpoint of Great Lent, let us take heart. The journey is not easy, but we do not walk alone. Christ Himself walks with us, strengthening us at every step. Let us press on with faith and humility, trusting in His mercy.
